The southern Iraqi city of Basra has been rocked by several days of intense protests against economic inequality, electricity interruptions, and in particular lack of clean water. The situation is moving at a rapid pace, with protesters torching buildings belonging to several different militias within the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), along with government buildings and the governor’s house. There are reports (and corroborating images) of Iraqi Army units defecting, and of others standing with the protesters. Protesters have begun calling for the downfall of the regime, and there is a very high likelihood of further violence. We will update this page as events occur.
